Sir Alan Yarrow, 687th Lord Mayor of London (2014-15)LORD MAYOR'S REFECTIONS 2016
Theme: Marketing UK plc with Confidence
Sir Alan Yarrow was Lord Mayor of the City of London from November 2014 to November 2015, the 687th person to hold that office in an unbroken sequence going back to 1189. He describes the role as a unique mix of history and modernity; pageantry and ceremonial; business and civic: charity and community.
He noted that the biggest element is business: acting as Ambassador in the UK and around the world for the City and related financial and professional services. The Lord Mayor also supports the work of the City as a provider of education and a centre of culture for all sectors of the UK economy. The Lord Mayor is Ambassador for the City as a place but also for London and the rest of the UK. Sir Alan gave his observations on why we in the UK fail to market ourselves with confidence as the greatest international financial centre in the world.
He also shared highlights from his year as Lord Mayor, a year which celebrated the anniversaries of Magna Carta, the Mayoral Charter, Waterloo, Agincourt et al, and was notable for the state visits of the Presidents of Mexico and China and a trade visit from the Prime Minister of India. During his year of office, Sir Alan visited 28 countries on five continents, promoting the City and the UK.
