Why become a sponsor of Reflections of The Lord Mayor?

Reflections of The Lord Mayor is a unique new London tradition that celebrates both the capital’s heritage and contemporary London life. Established in 2014, it is an opportunity to hear a former Lord Mayor of the City of London reflect on their year as holder of one of the oldest continuously elected civic offices, with a history dating back to the 12th century. In 2020, our Reflections speaker is the 690th Lord Mayor, Sir Charles Bowman.

Event founder and organiser Chris Seow has developed the event over time. In 2017, the first professional Roundel competition was held, helping to celebrate and revive interest in the historic art of stained-glass painting and design. This has been expanded to engage with young people via separate competitions (see below).

We are delighted that musicians from Royal College of Music Junior Department will be performing for guests. We will also be introducing the 2020’s recipient of the Reflections of The Lord Mayor’s Junior Musician Award in Music.

This is a non-profit event, with surplus from ticket sales, advertising and sponsorship going to the charity/ies nominated by our Lord Mayor speaker. It offers a range of opportunities to align your brand with an event that celebrates the civic and cultural life of the City of London, also celebrating professional talent and inspiring young people to engage with their community.

A unique and intimate London event

The 2019 event takes place in May at Vintners’ Hall, the home of the Worshipful Company of Vintners (of which Sir Andrew is current Master), In superb and historic Livery Company surroundings, the audience enjoy a networking reception, fine dinner and engaging speeches.

It’s an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the contemporary relevance of the Lord Mayor’s role, and on the value and global reach of London’s civic and community life.

The atmosphere and ambience is relaxed and convivial, with the audience maintained at a size that ensures guests feel party of an intimate gathering. Our atmosphere is enhanced by the rich diversity of our attendees. Alongside key representatives from City banks and businesses, academia, and industry, guests include distinguished representatives of London Embassies, High Commissions and Livery Companies.

Roundel Competitions

The first Roundel Competition was introduced in 2017, and came about as a result of our wish to provide a unique and significant memento to our Lord Mayor speaker. With the blessing of former Lord Mayor and then Master Glazier, Sir David Wootton an open competition was launched, attracting talented professional stained and painted glass artists from across the UK.

The following year, we set out to engage young people in both the civic life of London and this ancient art form, launching Schools and Sea Cadets competitions. Young people were asked to design a roundel on paper as their competition entry. For 2019, the young people’s competitions have been expanded to encompass the Sea Cadets, the Army Cadet Force and Air Cadets – collectively known as the Community Cadet Forces – across the London Region.

Winning designs from Cadets and our Schools competitions will be transformed into two unique Roundels by Helen Whittaker, one of UK’s leading stained-glass artists and our judging panel Chair. (Helen is part of Barley Studio, York, which created The Queen’s Window designed by David Hockney in Westminster Abbey).
